In 1941, the German physicist Werner Heisenberg made a strange trip to Copenhagen to visit his old friend, teacher, and colleague, Niels Bohr, a Danish Jew, and Bohr's Danish wife, Margrethe. Now the war is over, and the Nazis are gone. The three figures in the story are also dead and gone. But still they talk and wonder about what they did and yet didn't do...to make an atomic bomb.
