22 The performance lasts about one hour (without intermission) On Theodor (Theo) Krai’s 45th birthday, it seems that things are as bad as they can be. The failed author and former dissident, who was appointed head of a government publishing house, is facing disaster: His predecessor organizes a strike against him, a raged author wants to murder him, his secretary (and lover) wants from him what he cannot give. And if all this is not enough, a mysterious visitor arrives by the name of Luca, introduces himself as a secret police agent, and presents Theo with “gifts” that force the latter to re-examine his political past as a dissident under a sinister dictatorship, now that he has switched sides and become the darling of the regime. This process evolves into an investigation of Theo’s personal life, the repressed, lonely, unfeeling chapters of that life. While coping with the truth about himself, Theo’s supressed desire to write is kindled again.
