| Synopsis
| Elise
falls in love with Valere, after he saved her
from drowning. He sneaks into her father's house
and pretends
he is a servant. Cleante, Elise's brother, is
in love with Mariane, and he asks his sister's
help in dealing with their father.
In the meantime we learn that Harpagon, the father,
a sickly paranoid miser, who torments everyone
to death,
wants Mariane for himself. He designates old Anselm
to his daughter. Cleante and his servant - La
Fleche - trv to achieve monev in a devious fashion,
which fails.
Frozine, the matchmaker speeds up Harpagon and
Marhine's wedding, however, at Harpagon's house,
Mariane meets Cleante, Harpagon's son, the young
man who is in love with her, and she herself is
infatuated with him. La-Fleche steals the safe
in which Harpagon saves his money.
The Police Officer gets to the location, trying
to solve the theft mystery, but only when he gets
there, old Anselm,
Elise's broom-to-be, who suddenly appears as Deus
Ex Machina manages to solve the complication,
and reveals
Valere's real identity and other surprising family
relations.
