Once her father declares he is going to marry Sylvia to his friend's son, she resolves to change identities with her maid Lisette, ir order to put her future spouse to the proof test. Unbeknowest to her, the intended groom, Dorante, decides to swap his identity with his servant, Arlequin, under the assumed name Bourguingon.

Monsieur Orgon, Sylvia's father, and Mario, her brother, enjoy in their turn to complicate the plot and pull the strings.
